For a long time now I have wondered when people were really going to GET that social networking sites were dangerous to our privacy. Unfortunately, that didn't really seem to bother a lot of people!! Well - how about your physical safety?? Maybe this will cause people to sit up and take notice.
An app developer was forced to pull his app because of the outcry over it being a rapist's tool. How so? Well, it took PUBLICLY available information from Foursquare and Facebook and showed females that were in the area (and where they last checked in). It was called "Girls Around Me" - as the article describes: creepy.
On the other hand, its not like he hacked any sites to get unshared information - he just correlated it and displayed it on a map. AND he only used 2 sites. What if he had tried integrated Google+, Foursquare, Facebook, MySpace, etc, etc and so on!?!? Everyone is so paranoid about implanting chip tracking and facial recognition at public sites, but then they post "Hey - just saw a sale for cupcakes at 10th and O streets - they'll go great with the super sized caramel machiato frappuchino drink I'm about to get!" - with a timestamp 1 minute ago...hmmm - wonder where *YOU* are??
Here is the full story: http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/consumer-security/stalker-app-pulled-after-tool-for-rapists-outcry-20120402-1w7p4.html So - Consumer Reports initially reported that the new iPad 3 gets really really hot during gameplaying. Now, it looks like they have done a complete 360 on that viewpoint.
Now, there are a couple of take aways from this - first - maybe Apple isn't *always* perfect. Honestly, I have no problem with Apple (or Microsoft or Linux for that matter), but I really don't like it when people won't admit that there could possibly be a flaw in their products. I'm really tired of the "My MAC never has issues" - when, in fact, they do have issues - they pretty much use the same components as other PC's, and so hard drives can crash, software can get corrupt, etc. Perhaps the end-user is a bit more isolated from being able to tinker, but Perfect?? I don't think so...
